Platypus Media's goals are relatively simple. We want to educate grown-ups and children about the world around them. We publish books that foster warmth, closeness, literacy, curiosity, and an openness to other cultures. We bring products to the market that parents love, children enjoy, teachers appreciate, and parenting professionals value - and do so in a way that is commercially viable.
Platypus Media was founded over seven years ago to promote family life through quality publications. Dia Michels, company founder and president, is an award-winning author of books in women's health and science education. Co-founder and original editor-in-chief, Ellen Roberts, brought to the company 25 years of publishing experience as well as success as an author of instructional books for writers.
Our first books were published in 2001. Since then, Platypus Media has garnered widespread praise. Authors, including Dia Michels, Cynthia Good Mojab, Dr. James J. McKenna, and Nathan Levy, are respected experts in their field. They are regularly quoted in international media and print publications and are sought-after speakers at conferences worldwide.
Platypus Media books have been reviewed by School Library Journal and Booklist and featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the Los Angeles Zoo, the Boston Children's Museum and Museum of Science. Platypus' list of endorsements includes the National Association of Science Teachers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Carnegie Academy for Science Education. Our books have also been featured on RIFNet and on Maryland Public Television. Rave reviews continue to pour in from school librarians, public librarians, homeschoolers, lactation professionals, museum educators, museum stores, and parents.
We are gratified at the strength of sales for our existing books and the interest in our upcoming titles. We are working hard to meet our goal of educating grown-ups and children about the world around them. And we are especially proud that others feel that we are meeting our mission. As the well-respected pediatrician Dr. William Sears says, "Platypus Media's books not only promote literacy, they promote families!"
